Saint Rita of Cascia (Born Margherita Lotti 1371 - May 22, 1447) was an Italian widow and Augustinian nun. Rita was united with Jesus in a profound experience when a thorn from his crown penetrated her forehead. The wound it caused remained open and visible until the day of her death. At her canonization ceremony she was bestowed the title of Patroness of Impossible Causes, while in many Catholic countries, Rita came to be known to be as the patroness of abused wives and heartbroken women.
