JR Tokai Maglev Train Hits World Record 603 kph

TSURU, JAPAN - APRIL 21: The L0 Series maglev train runs on the JR Tokai's Yamanashi Maglev Test Track shortly after hitting a record 603 kph on April 21, 2015 in Tsuru, Yamanashi, Japan. The train shattered its previous record of 590 kph, which it reached on April 16 on the same track. JR Tokai plans to submit the new mark to Guinness World Records. The maximum speed of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen line, scheduled to start operation in 2027, will be 500 kph on commercial service. But JR Tokai is running the vehicle faster to assess the effects of wind drag and electricity consumption. Data collected through the tests will be used to improve the maglev's design and technology.
