Erich Raeder In Submarine Conning Tower

(Original Caption) 10/6/1939- Wilhelmshaven, Germany: From him a tip to Uncle Sam. Pictured atop the conning tower of one of Germany's biggest submarines is Grand Admiral Erich Rader, chief of Germany's Naval forces (center with iron cross), during a review in the Baltic, Admiral Raeder made headlines in the United States with his warning to the United States government that the liner Iroquois, of the Clyde Mallory line, will be sunk near the African coast. The Iroquois is heading for New York with 584 refugees from Europe. President Roosevelt issued orders to American Naval craft to go out and escort the American liner home. Raeder's tip implied that the sinking was to be done by a foe of Germany.
