In a demonstration held for residents on Feburary 6 ,2017,Japan, municipal officials in Soka, Saitama Prefecture, showed off a self-inflating crossing gate that automatically deploys to stop vehicles from entering a tunnel in case of sudden heavy rains. Set near the entrance of a passage beneath railway tracks, the device horizontally extends a 60-centimeter arm measuring 3.5 meters in length once flood waters reach a level of 15 centimeters. Until now the city has relied on patrols and reports from the public to respond to flooding and close the tunnel.
