September 11th attacks: Five years on: Grosvenor Square memorial garden; Tessa Jowell holding bouquet of flowers PAN to Robert Tuttle (American Ambassador to the UK) speech SOT - It's hard to believe that 5 years has passed / Our Embassy community offer you all our sincere condolences, we share your sorrow as we commemorate this anniversary / Looking at world today the sadness that began on September 11th seems to have expanded, bringing sorrow to thousands more / This beautiful memorial shows that life does go on, seasons change and continue to grow and as we see, blossom / It is proof that there is hope and life / Time does play tricks, events and places blur whilst others seem closer / Aspects of that day will be forever etched in our minds / For you here today that search ended in tragedy / The events of 9/11 created a kind of family, made and shared by experience and emotion we are here to honour those no longer with us / This time will serve as a memorial to the past and a symbol of our unity / We are all bound together by a shared hope / There is a poem called Garden Santuary, which seems particularly apt today / 'You will who walk with troubled thoughts, come enter here and rest, and may the sweet serenity of growing things, and the heavenly peace be nearer in thy soul' / Introduces Tessa Jowell
