High perch phaeton - stock illustration
The carriage driver has found a novel way of seeing what is ahead of him by perching on top of this fashionably-coiffed lady's up-do. One of a series of cartoons about elaborate hairstyles from "Almanach Pour Rire, 1870" a French almanack published in Paris by Pagnerre in 1869, containing humorous sketches and useful facts. This particular edition (the 21st year) would have appeared shortly before the start of the Franco-Prussian War.
