Branch Rickey On The Phone
American baseball executive and former player Branch Rickey (1881 - 1965) laughs and smokes a cigar as he talks on the telephone, 1962. Rickey is best known for breaking the Major League Baseball color barrier by hiring Jackie Robinson to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He also set up the modern minor league farm team system when he was manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. For his many innovations he was given the nickname 'The Mahatma.' 'Mahatma' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'Great One.' (Photo by Robert Riger/Getty Images)
