Vancouver, CANADA: An airplane takes off from Vancouver International Airport 13 August 2005. Vancouver is the first airport in the world to purchase the Tarsier radar system developed by the British company QinetiQ. Tarsier can detect small items of debris on a runway from a kilometre and uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to direct airport staff to the location within minutes of the debris' detection.
