Venezuelan Immigrants Living in Colombian Border Settlement

RIOHACHA, COLOMBIA - JUNE 10: Ana Correa, a 32-year-old Venezuelan pose with her children in their home in Brisas del Norte settlement on June 10, 2019 in Riohacha, Colombia. Ana and her husband, Nixon Fernandez, a 32-year-old Venezuelan Wayuu indigenous, arrived in Colombia three years ago from Maracaibo, Venezuela and have been living for two years with their children with visual impairment due to a congenital disease. Ana got a job as a domestic employee and Nixon as a recycler. Brisas del Norte is an informal settlement that is inhabited by returning Colombians as well as Venezuelans escaping a political and economic crisis back home. They receive help from UNHCR, UNICEF and the governments of Norway and The Netherlands. The slum was visited on Friday 7th by UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie and Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Kelly Clements. Over 4 million Venezuelans are now living in exile, with Colombia taking in the greatest share, even as it seeks to implement a peace deal ending five decades of conflict inside its own borders.
