Accident survivor Artis Jacobsen celebrates 20th anniversary of horrific accident with friends and family near Christmas.

dARVADA, CO - DECEMBER 9: Artis Jacobsen, fourth from left, and her lifelong and closest friends surround her at her home on December 9, 2018 in Arvada, Colorado. They are from left to right Erika Righter, Katherine Burkhart, Missy MacKinnon, Jacobsen, Emily Trede, Ida Mae Issac, Alicia Cavallaro and Chelse Oakley. Twenty years ago Artis, whose last name was Selby at the time, was involved in a horrific multi-car pile-up on northbound I-25 east of Mead that killed a young couple and left the young 19 year old Artis on a life changing journey to save her right leg that was smashed in the accident. The wreck still goes down as one of the worst accidents ever on I-25 in Colorado. Artis was trapped, upside down, inside her Toyota Camry that was caught in the middle of the pile up. Large steel slabs that had been on the flatbed of a truck slid off and flattened her car to 3 feet. Miraculously she survived but it took firefighters 3 hours to extricate her from the vehicle. She spent years saving her right leg which was completely smashed in the accident. She has had 29 surgeries since the accident. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the accident that changed her life and the lives of people close to her. The girls have all been friends for more than 20 years. The close knit family and friends share a bond of survival, recovery and overcoming overwhelming odds against her. (Photo by Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post via Getty Images)
