(Original Caption) At Whitefield on the sixth day of the presidential tour, the traveling White House staff announced that a Navy Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune patrol bomber of this type, on a routine flight over the international waters in the Bering Strait area, had been fired upon and forced down on June 22 by Soviet planes. Seven of the 11 U.S. crewmen were injured when it crash landed on St. Lawrence Island, 40 miles from the coast of Siberia.
