Ugandan Popstar Leads People Power Campaign To Unseat President Of 33 Years

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, is a popstar and opposition leader under the ‘People Power’ campaign. He was elected as a member of parliament in July 2017, and on the 24th of July this year it was announced that Wine will take on Uganda's longstanding president Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 election. In a statement he said: 'On behalf of the people of Uganda, I am challenging you (Museveni) to a free and fair election in 2021. We're ready to kick Museveni and his cronies out power.' In August 2018, Wine was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a weapon; the following month, after violent protests across the country, the state prosecution withdrew the charges and Kyagulanyi was released on bail. He subsequently traveled to the United States for medical treatment for injuries he received in custody, allegations the government denies. In September 2019, the government of Uganda banned the wearing of red berets, famously worn by Wine and the supporters of the People Power campaign.
