Bateman acted leading roles with Henry Irving throughout the 1870s, appearing in his productions of 'Charles I', 'Richard III' and 'Hamlet', among others. One critic called her Ophelia the sweetest and tenderest ever seen. She had become manager of the Lyceum Theatre by the time Irving presented Tennyson's plays there, but she left the stage in 1898 to become a nun. Cameron's photographic portraits are considered among the finest in the early history of photography. She set up a private studio at her Isle of Wight home at the age of 48, after her daughter gave her a camera, and she became expert at using the collodion wet-plate process.
