CHHNOUK TROU, KAMPONG CHHNANG, CAMBODIA - 1998/04/01: Chang Y Sieng tends to her 5-year-old grandson in the provincial hospital. He was injured in a Khmer Rouge attack on their fishing village. In the middle of the night, the KR fired rockets and guns into the village, killing 22 and wounding 16.
Many of the dead were cremated in a makeshift pyre atop the ashes of their homes. Survivors said that they overheard the Khmer Rouge saying they wanted to kill the Vietnamese, a historic bugbear of the Khmer people. Yet the village was a mix of Khmer and Vietnamese, and equal numbers of both were killed and injured.. (Photo by Jerry Redfern/LightRocket via Getty Images)
