The Montes de Maria are a group of mountains in the northern coast of Colombia (the Caribbean Region), located in the centre of the Colombian departments of Bolivar and Sucre. Its condition as a strategic corridor between the south of the country and the Atlantic Ocean converted the region in a disputed territory for different armed groups. Between 1996 and 2002, bomb attacks, selective assassinations and attacks against electric infrastructures were an every day occurrence. According to the Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law of the Vice Presidency of Colombia, the region of Montes de Maria now presents a stable trend with regard to the development of military actions as the army claims that the security situation has improved significantly.
