(Original Caption) 11/2/1941-Damascus, Syria- Cheikh Taggadine,the new President of Syria,inspects a guard of honor of Free French troops outside the Town Hall.Syria was granted her independence when Free French General Catroux formally handed the country over in a broadcast speech from Damascus. British intentions in regard to Syria were explained by Prime Minister Winston Churchill recently in the House of Commons: "We seek no British advantage in Syria.Our only object in occupying the country has been to beat the Germans."
