KANDAHAR A CITY ON EDGE

PANJWAYI DISTRICT, AFGHANISTAN -- MAY 4, 2021: Displaced residents from Panjwayi make fresh bread at at an IDP Camp in Panjwayi District, Afghanistan, Tuesday, May 4, 2021. The city of Kandahar, once the TalibanÕs spiritual capital and a gateway between Pakistan and Iran Ð has seen much fighting between government security forces and the Taliban on its outskirts in the last six months. Energized by a live-let-live deal with the U.S., Taliban fighters blitzed into Arghandab, Panjwayi, Maiwand and Zhari, all districts surrounding Kandahar as part of a larger country-wide campaign. In the ongoing scorch test between the two sides, Kandaharis wonder what will endure in the cityÕs post-withdrawal future. Two decades of guerrilla war has wrecked the worn-out towns and villages of AfghanistanÕs southern region. Some are fearful, others happily anticipate an inevitable Taliban takeover; for many, the fight has gone on for so long that sides are irrelevant: TheyÕll give allegiance to whoever can stop the carnage.
