Dr. Cynthia Evans opens one of three pas

Dr. Cynthia Evans opens one of three pass-through chambers to demonstrate the Geolab glovebox rock sample testing laboratory, inside the Habitat Demonstration Unit Pressurized Excursion Module (HDU-PEM), a concept off-Earth living and work quarters for astronauts stationed in space, September 15, 2010 on the last day of NASAs two-week field testing of new aerospace technology at Black Point Lava Flow in the north Arizona desert approximately 40 miles (64 km) north of Flagstaff, Arizona. Using a pass-through chamber for direct sample transfer into the glovebox, the Geolab will allow scientists to conduct in-field analysis of rock samples on asteroids, the moon or Mars. The testing program, called Desert Research and Technology Studies (Desert RATS), is an annual opportunity for NASA engineers and scientists to stress test rovers and other cutting-edge space technologies in an arid environment simulating the conditions found on the surface of extraterrestrial bodies.
