Building Dam
During the fighting on the Red River, Louisiana, a Union fleet of 33 vessels was trapped at Alexandria by low water. A quick thinking engineer, Colonel Joseph Bailey, ordered a dam constructed across the river to raise the level and allow the fleet to escape. The gap in the middle of the dam allowed ships to pass through. | Location: near Alexandria, Louisiana, Confederate States of America. (Photo by © CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)
