Fantascope disc, 1833. Artist: Thomas Mann Baynes
Fantascope (Phenakistoscope), 1833. An optical toy depending on persistence of vision for its effect. The disc shows multiple images of cat chasing a bird. When the picture is spun on a spindle and turned on its side in front of a looking glass (mirror), the image gives the impression that the cat is actively chasing the bird. From Fantascope published by Ackermann and Co. (London, 1833). (Photo by Oxford Science Archive/Print Collector/Getty Images)
