SOMALIA-UNREST-CATHEDRAL

A gunman walks 18 May 2001 in the remains of the old Mogadishu Cathedral in Mogadishu. The Cathedral and most of the city have been destroyed during the last ten years. At least 28 people have died and about 30 wounded in interclan fighting which erupted in Somalia's southern Middle Shabelle region 19 and 20 May, the country's interior minister said 24 May 2001 in Mogadishu. Somalia has lacked an effective central govermnet and has been wracked by interclan warfare since the 1991 fall of the dictator Mohammed Siad Barre.
