BRITAIN-RELIGION-HISTORY-WAR-WW1-CENTENARY

A handwritten book shows the names of all 138 recovering WW1 soldiers who created the recently restored altar frontal in Saint Paul's Cathedral in central London, England, on August 1, 2014. Depicting the chalice of the Eucharist and the palm branches of martyrdom, the altar frontal was commissioned for the national service of thanksgiving shortly after the end of the war in July 1919. As one of many forms of rehabilitation, emboridery was seen as a good way of greatly helping to reduce the effects of shell shock, owing to its intricacy and need for concentration and a steady hand. The frontal will be displayed throughout the centenary period, from August 3, 2014 to November 11, 2018. AFP PHOTO/Leon NEAL (Photo credit should read LEON NEAL/AFP via Getty Images)
