University of Halle recevies rubbings of 600 gravestones

26 June 2018, Halle/Saale, Germany: The rubbing of Rudolf von Bünau's gravestone from the Naumburg cathedral can be seen at the university of Halle. Herring and Lamp are considered experts in the area of Brass Rubbings and have donated their personal collections to the University of Halle archives. It concerns 600 detailed rubbings of gravestones from across England and Germany. The origins of brass rubbing as a form of documentation dates back to 18th and 19th century England. Lamp and Herring have produced more than 600 gravestone rubbings over the course of 60 years. With the addition of this collection the university of Halle now owns the largest collection of its kind in Europe. It will be provided for the study of art history, as well as studies concerning religion and philology.
