A large opalescent ammonite, with an estimated sale price of USD20,000-23,000, is on display at an auction preview, May 6, 2010 in Los Angeles. Bonhams & Butterfields upcoming National History Auction, on May 27 in New York, will afford bidders the opportunity to own an unusal selection of prehistoric fossils, archeological artifacts, gold nuggets, meteorite slices and even a Martian meteorite discovered in the Mojave Desert in 1999. Ammonite, a biogenic gemstone, has a brillant palette produced by light interference by the layers of the ancient mollusk shell.
