(Original Caption) 6/21/1960-Leopoldville, The Congo- New Congo Premier Patrice Lumumba, (center, white suit), is among the deputies in the Congolese Parliament chamber cheering as Joseph Kasongo is elected Speaker of the Chamber. On June 27th, Joseph Kasavubu was sworn in as the first president of the new republic, while about 1,000 hostile Baluba tribesmen gathered illegally outside the palace. They protesteed that their group was not represented in Lumumba's government.
