Thurgood Marshal and Leading Civil Rights Lawyers

(Original Caption) Negro attorneys Harold R. Boulware (L), Columbia, S.C., and Spotswood Robinson III (R), who are arguing against segregation before the Supreme Court, discuss their strategy during the first day (Dec. 7th) of the historic two-day hearings on the issue. Robinson and Marshall led off for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), urging the High Court to end racial segregation in the public schools and wipe out "a sorry heritage of slavery." The cases of four states and the District of Colombia are under consideration.
