Focus On Centenarian Prisoner Of War Survivor Giorgio Allori

Giorgio Allori, born in Livorno on 4 February, 1922, was one of Italy’s 650,000 prisoners of war, interned between 1943 and 1945 during World War II for the crime of not wanting to join the Republic of Salò and its Nazi ally. He was captured by the Nazis on the 9th September 1943, having just arrived in Parma two days prior from the Military Academy in Modena, to attend the Application School. During the two years of his imprisonment he was moved around various concentration camps; the Toruń camp in Poland, then on to Częstochowa, Przemyśl. He was then transferred to Germany and was incarcerated in Nuremberg, Altengrabown and was finally taken to Berlin. The young soldier Giorgio Allori had managed to keep a prison notebook, with a blue cover, where he drew maps of the concentration camps, made small notes and recorded his and his fellow prisoners’ memories of their favourite recipes and restaurants to keep their hunger at bay and keep their imagination alive.
