BEIJING, CHINA: Picture dated 01 September 1981 in Beijing of Hu Yaobang (R, 1915-89) and Chinese Communist leader Deng Xiaoping (1904-97). Purged during the Cultural Revolution (1966-9), Hu Yaobang was elected Chinese Communist party leader in 1981 and dismissed in 1987 for his relaxed handling of wave of student unrest. Popularly revered as a liberal reformer, his death triggered an unprecedented wave of pro-democracy demonstration in May 1989. Dismissed in 1976 after the death of Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping was restored to power, and since 1978 has taken China through a rapid course of pragmatic reforms. His prestige was damaged by his role in the repression of the mass pro-democracy protest on Tiananmen Square in 1989. (Photo credit should read AFP via Getty Images)
