Portrait of Rev. Dr. Charles Douglas Martin
Portrait of Charles D. Martin (1873-1942), a West Indian Moravian minister who was born in St. Kitts, British West Indies and founder of Beth-Tphillah, fourth Moravian Church in Harlem, New York in 1908 and was ordained in 1912 as the only Black minister of the Moravian Church in the United States of America. Dr. Martin was a close associate of noted bibliophile Arthur A. Schomburg, who was the founder of the Schomburg Center for Research. Dr. Martin was a collector and owned a large collection of books on Black culture and history, theological works and West Indian and African culture. The Martin Collection which serves as the anchor of the James E. Shepard Memorial Library Special Collections was acquired by the University and was received on March 23, 1950.
