Protests Are Held Outside The Marie Stopes Family Planning Clinic In Belfast

Terminations for unwanted pregnancies are still unlawful in Northern Ireland despite a recent high court judgement that found the current laws were incompatible with human rights. Yesterday a 21 year old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged in Belfast Magistrates' court with unlawfully administering to herself noxious substances, namely the drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol, with intent to procure a miscarriage for herself. Anti-abortion protestors have been present outside the clinic since it opened in 2012 which has led to volunteers being employed to escort women seeking assistance in relation to unwanted pregnancies to and from the building.
