Swedish Author and AIDS Activist Henning Mankell
Swedish crime writer Henning Mankell, aged 56, is the creator of detective Kurt Wallander. However, Mankell's other passion centres on the plight of African orphan's in his role as AIDS activist. Mankell moved to Mozambique in 1972 where he spends part of his time in the country, boarding with a friend and taking an active part in local life, far away from the ex-pats. Mankell talks to local women fish sellers on the jetty where the ferryboats travel across Maputo Bay. (Photo by Gideon Mendel/Corbis via Getty Images)
