The deputy mayor of Plymouth welcomes the crew of the British Royal Navy Leander-class light cruiser, HMS Ajax, on their return from the Battle of the River Plate in the South Atlantic, 31st January 1940. The actions of HMS Ajax, along with HMNZS Achilles and HMS Exeter during the battle, forced the captain of the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee to scuttle his ship in Montevideo harbour on 17th December 1939.
