Guy Fawkes Day, 1805

The original text with this print reads as follows: Annually, on the 5th day of November, there is a very general custom for the rabble to burn an effigy Guy Fawkes. To personate this miscreant, an old dress is taken and stuffed with straw, rags, etc., with a barber's block for a head, a bundle of matches stuck in his bosom, and a dark lantern fastened to his gloves; thus equipped and placed on a chair between 2 poles, he is carried about the village by troops of boys, vociferating Pray Remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, etc. This noisy procession parades the streets, begging money to enable them to purchase crackers, squibs, and other fireworks, which at night are played off, after erecting a gibbet on which the figure is hung, and kindling a large bonfire to consume the ancient incendiary.
