ABINGDON, VA - MAY, 1967: A traveling circus sideshow attracts customers to see "JoAnn the Doublesex Wonder" during a stop in the small town of Abingdon, Virginia. "JoAnn" also entertained crowds by handling a snake while his/her assistant drummed for business. The assistant was also a fireeater. Half-male/half-female attractions are a popular draw at sideshows. They usually feature an actual hermaphrodite, but the show often employes a male who took hormones to grow breasts so that he could display the upper "female" half to paying customers.
