CHECHNYA-TROOPS

Two women rise white flags through the broken window of the bus where a group of Chechen fighters keep them as hostages 10 January 1996 in the region of Pervomaysk near the border with Chechnya. A group of Chechen guerillas has released most of the some 2,000 hostages, but retain allegedly still some 300 hostages. Russian special forces are surrounding the guerillas and their hostages and talks between the both sides have resumed. Russian troops entered Chechnya 11 December 1994 with the stated aim of introducing constitutional rule in the Caucasus republic. (Photo credit should read OLEG NIKISHIN/AFP via Getty Images)
