ETOUM, ATTAPEU, LAOS - 2006/04/22: Villagers talk about a nearby shallow pit holding an unknown type of bomb from the Vietnam War. When villagers lit the field to clear it, the bomb released a cloud that burned people's skin and lungs. A technician with national explosives-removal group UXOLao says it is probably a phosphorous bomb, but they cannot safely remove it. Etoum lies on a crossroads of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail and was heavily bombed during the Vietnam War. The Lao government moved Etoum from a nearby location to its current spot atop the heavily bombed patch of ground two years ago. Locals now must contend with UXO (unexploded ordnance) throughout their new village and farmland.. (Photo by Jerry Redfern/LightRocket via Getty Images)
