Early Morning Fog in the Mountains - stock photo

The word chiaroscuro is Italian for light and shadow. Chiaroscuro, in art and photography, is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually to bring out a three dimensional effect in a two dimensional work of art. In this photograph chiaroscuro is achieved from the way that the fog makes the near objects darker and clearer than the far objects in the picture. An early morning fog settled into the valley of the American River in the early morning giving the chiaroscuro effect. This picture was taken from the Pacific Crest Trail near Chinook Pass in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, Washington State, USA.
