Guttation--Loss of liquid water from leaves - stock photo

GUTTATION--loss of liquid water from leaves, Coltsfoot (Petasites frigidus). Guttation occurs when soil moisture is high and transpiration is quite low. At night the stomata are closed, and water continues to move into the roots (root pressure). Water is forced out of special openings (hydathones) at the ends of leaf veins. Note the water droplets at the leaf margins. Coastal Redwood Forest, Northern California.
