An astrocyte is one of the four types of neuroglia (glial cells) found in the central nervous system. They are star-shaped, spidery cells found between neurons and blood vessels. In this image many astrocytes are seen attached to the capillary via perivascular feet. Astrocytes are likely MULTIFUNCTIONAL: support, metabolism of glucose, regulation of potassium ions, nutritive functions, etc. An Astrocytoma is a tumor made up of Astrocytes.
