Small bowel ischemia, light micrograph - stock photo

Light micrograph of ischemic small bowel. Ischemia occurs when the supply of oxygen and nutrients from the blood to the cells of an organ is compromised. As seen in this image, microscopic features of ischemia in the small bowel include congestion or pooling of blood within blood vessels (bright red). Another feature of ischemia is necrosis (death) of the cells of the intestinal villi (vertically oriented finger like structures), so that the villi appear diffusely eosinophilic (pink). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 100x when printed at 10cm
