Tidenham Tunnel. - stock photo

Tidenham tunnel was built as one of two tunnels on the Wye Valley railway, which opened in 1876. Following dwindling passenger numbers, the last passenger train passed through the tunnel on the fifth of January 1959. Most of the rails were subsequently removed, but the section between Tintern Quarry and the mainline was maintained to serve the two quarries on the line. The last train would therefore travel through this tunnel in 1981, when Tintern Quarry closed. This tunnel is 1,178 yards long.
