Yakushima Island is one of the Osumi Islands, which are part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It is the seventh largest island in Japan. The island is sometimes referred to as the "offshore Alps", because it has more than forty peaks over 1,000 m in elevation. It is also home to a large amount of important flora and fauna, including primary forests of a type of Japanese cedar ”Cryptomeria japonica”, known as Yuku-sugi, which can live for over 1,000 years. The island was designated as a natural World Heritage site in 1993.
