Cherry salmon, Oncorhynchus masou in the Shojin River. The fish has a cherry-red appearance because of the breeding season. Underwater footage. The cherry salmon is a species of the Salmonidae, salmonid family. It is anadromous, normally living out at sea, but migrating up rivers in order to spawn. The salmon is so named on account of the cherry-red appearance it develops when breeding. Shojin River was once fenced off and its banks were concreted over, making it a far from ideal place for flora and fauna. But over twenty years ago, the concrete was removed and other work was done to get the river back near to its natural state. The rich natural environment has been restored. Cherry salmon once again move up this river to spawn.
