Conservatives: David Cameron monthly press conference

Conservatives: David Cameron monthly press conference; David Cameron MP (Conservative Leader) speech at monthly press conference SOT- Today I want to talk about the big choice opening up in British politics. We need change - and we need it now because the Government's failure on every front is becoming apparent. Let's take one random day - today.Just look at the waste. The Government creates a new department and spends 134m pounds, on refitting the building. It was perfectly fit for purpose when I was an adviser there fourteen years ago.Look at the incompetence - we have the shambles of the SATS testing system which has let our children down, let parents down and let the schools down. All under a contract awarded by this Government. And the incompetence leads to another reminder of waste as we see the vast salary and absurd perks for someone supposed to be a civil servant running an important part of the education system. Then we have the incompetence leading to waste. Only this Government could have an efficiency drive designed to save 57m pounds, but ended up wasting 81m pounds in the process! That's just in the Department of Transport - described as "stupendous incompetence".These are all signs of a Government that has been in power too long. And the signs go deep. We've got a Home Secretary who can't apologise properly over the "corrosive" misrepresentation of knife crime statistics. We've got a Government that still refuses to acknowledge that it is wrong to arrest an opposition politician for doing his job. And we've got a Prime Minister who thinks he's saved the world. There is a big choice opening up in politics today, on both the economy and society. On the economy, you've got Labour on one side arguing that we should cut VAT when prices are already falling, with borrowed money we haven't got. On the other side we the Conservatives argue that when you're already borrowing so much, it is wrong to deliberately borrow even more. ...
