Dead Earth and subgiant Sun - HD stock video
Animation of a flight over the scorched dry surface of the future Earth. The dying subgiant Sun is seen in the black sky, its face being transitted by the more distant Moon. The Sun is around halfway through its stable life. It is gradually getting hotter, and in around one billion years the Earth will be uninhabitable. When the Sun runs out of hydrogen fuel at its core in some six billion years, it will start burning hydrogen in a shell around an inert helium core. This will cause it to swell and redden, becoming a subgiant on its way to the red giant stage. At this stage it will appear two or three times larger in the sky, from which the atmosphere has been driven off. The Moon is gradually receding from the Earth too, and will appear much smaller in the sky in that time, unable to eclipse the growing Sun
