Graphic of Trump’s tweet: “Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change! This is why we need more Republicans elected in November. Democrats are good at only three things, High Taxes, High Crime and Obstruction. Sad!” Insert graphics “Trump’s Zero Tolerance: 1, 995 Children Separated At the Southern Border From April 19, 2018-May 31, 2018”. 14:02:18 Gura is joined by MSNBC correspondent Mariana Atencio at the Catholic Charities Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. In x-talk with Gura, Atencio notes she spoke with 100 families yesterday who said they were afraid of the policy changes being made, notes the volunteers behind her are preparing for the next group of families that will be dropped off by immigration authorities, notes McAllen is the epicenter of how the zero tolerance policy is playing out, recalls seeing mass prosecution of people and children being separated from their parents, notes the Southern District of Texas Public Defender’s Office told her that almost 400 children in the first two weeks of June were separated from their families, says for families who did cross the border illegal but were not prosecuted the fear of separation, even in detention centers, is real, recalls speaking with a father and son at the center regarding their ordeal. In an interview with Atencio (with Atencio translating) migrant father Santana Contreras says he was sad and devastated to be separated from his son and says he would not have crossed had he known he was going to be separated from his son and says God helped them. In an interview Contreras’ son, Tani Contreras, says there was a fence and he was sleeping on the floor with a blanket. Insert stills of men, women and children outside the federal courthouse in McAllen. Graphics “Zero Tolerance Policy: McAllen, Texas: Week of June 4-8: 498 Clients, 187 Had Children Taken; Week of June 11-15: 619 Clients; 176 Had Children Taken”. 14:05:26 Gura is joined by HuffPost immigration reporter Elise Foley in the newsroom in Washington, DC and NPR SW Correspondent John Burnett in an undisclosed location. Burnett notes he has spent weeks traveling the Mexico-US border lands, that defendants are being prosecuted, the borders are more militarized, notes asylum seekers are being arrested, that there is a crisis taking place at the border and the question is if the administration is making it worse, says the largest shelter of its kind is almost full, says the Health and Human Services will open a tent city outside of El Paso, Texas, and says officials in El Paso are protesting because of the Texas heat. In an interview Foley says there has been outrage of families being separated, says House Republicans are working on an immigration bill, that Republicans are saying there is something in the bill that would stop family separating, says Trump and some Republicans are using the family separation outrage to get the other policies they have been pushing for, says a lot of Republicans who have been decrying amnesty for a long time don’t want to support something that will be framed that way, says if you have a president not backing something, it makes a lot of Republicans say why bother backing this legislation, says Trump could have tanked the bill by seeming he wasn’t going to support it, that the White House released that statement, that it’s their best chance to get a bill out of the House, says Trump needs to support it or it’s totally dead. Graphic of Trump’s tweet: “The Democrats are forcing the breakup of families at the Border with their horrible and cruel legislative agenda. Any Immigration Bill MUST HVE full funding for the Wall, end Catch & Release, Visa Lottery and Chain, and go to Merit Based Immigration. Go for it! WIN!” Clips of person making beds at a facility. Graphics “GOP Immigration Compromise Bill: Eliminates the Diversity Visa Lottery; Limits Certain Family-Based Visas; Restricts Access to Asylum; Requires Border Patrol to Deploy No Fewer Than 26,370 Agents by 2023; Sets Aside $16.6 Billion for a Wall on the U.S. Mexico Border; Sets Aside $6.8 Billion for Border Security Infrastructure”. Clip of Trump saying “I’m looking at both of them. I certainly wouldn’t sign the more moderate one. I need a bill that gives this country tremendous border security. I have to have that.” Still of White House Principle Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah and supers “WH Response to GOP Immigration Bills: ‘The President fully supports both the Goodlatte bill and the House leadership bill. In this morning’s interview, he was commenting on the discharge petition in the House and not the new package. He would sign either the Goodlatte or the leadership bills.’” Clips of men, women and children in a tent, of a child crawling on the floor, of men and women eating and of men, women and children on Brownsville, Texas. Clips of protesters with signs. 14:11:57 Gura previews upcoming segment. Clip of Trump. Courtroom drawings of Paul Manafort. 14:11:27 Gura fact checks Trump’s impromptu press conference. Clip of Trump saying “I did nothing wrong. There was no collusion. There was no obstruction. The IG report yesterday went a long way to show that.” Buzzer sounds. Insert graphic “FALSE” in red. Gura notes the IG report showed how the FBI handled the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server. Graphic of Trump’s tweet: “The IG Report totally destroys James Comey and all of his minions including the great lovers, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, who started the disgraceful Witch Hunt against so many innocent people. It will go down as a dark and dangerous period in American History!” Clip of Trump saying “Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign. He worked for me for 49 days or something. Very short period of time.” Buzzer sounds. Insert graphic “FALSE” in red. Gura reports Paul Manafort was Trump’s campaign chairman and he was in that job for 144 days, not 49. Still of Trump and then National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Graphic of Trump’s tweet from 2017-12-02: “I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!” Clip of Trump saying “I hate the children being taken away. The Democrats have to change their law. That’s their law.” Buzzer sounds. Insert graphic “FALSE” in red. Gura reports separating migrant families is a policy of the Trump administration, that it is a huge part of Attorney General Jeff Session’s zero tolerance approach to immigration. 14:17:12 Gura is joined by NBC News White House Correspondent Geoff Bennett outside the White House in Washington, DC, MSNBC Intelligence & National Security Correspondent Ken Dilanian in the newsroom in Washington, DC and the Los Angeles Times reporter (and MSNBC political analyst) Eli Stokols in Washington, DC. Bennett reports people have seen Trump misrepresent details about key issues, that he’s made statements that are easily disprovable, says Trump’s core of supporters have not required anything different from him, says white men without a college degree give him an 68-29 percent approval rating, that this works for Trump even if it’s with small base supporters and says this is coming to a head, says Republicans can target sanctuary cities, that they can get away with Trump refers to Hispanic gang members as animals, but the issue of separating migrant children from their parents at the border is a political loser in the mid-term elections, that this is going to cost them the support of white suburban women that they need to make sure Democrats don’t take control of Congress, says Trump doesn’t want to get too close to the subject in case it blows up in his face, that he wants to use it as leverage to get Democrats to give in to his demands to fund his border wall and enact tougher border restrictions. Clip of Trump walking and talking with reporters. Stokols says Trump seems to understand that reason and facts are not match for emotions and tribalism, says that’s the base of how Trump communicates, says Trump glides over the facts, that he threw two different numbers during the press conference, that he throws out misinformation, that the media fact-checks him and uses that to tell his supporters that the media is after him. Various clips of Trump. Dilanian says Manafort is lucky that he is not in the DC jail, says Manafort is under pressure, that he doesn’t have much of a defense, says Manafort is in jail because prosecutors were able to show Manafort tampered with witnesses, and that Manafort may be key to the Mueller investigation. Still of a judge’s bench and supers “Judge to Paul Manafort: ‘I cannot turn a blind eye to this… This isn’t middle school, I can’t take your phone.’ – U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson.’” Clips of Manafort seen. Clips of men, women and children, of rows of tents, of migrants workers walking with their small children. 14:24:06 Gura previews upcoming segment. Clip of Manafort walking. Clip of Trump commenting on Manafort. 14:27:56 Clip of Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, saying “What they have been doing to him is heartless. It’s cruel. It’s an investigation made up of bunch of distorted human beings who cry. Imagine FBI agents and prosecutors crying when Hillary Clinton wasn’t elected. I think if I can get those pictures of them crying instead of investigating President Trump they should go to Bellevue. Wackadoodles.” 14:28:25 Gura reports former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort is in jail outside Washington, DC, that he was jailed after being charged with witness tampering. Clips of Manafort arriving outside the courthouse. Graphic of Trump’s tweet: “Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns. Didn’t know Manafort was the head of the Mob. What about Comey and Crooked Hillary and all of the others? Very unfair!” Courtroom sketches by Art Lien of Manafort seen. 14:29:14 Gura vo stills of Trump and Giuliani. Graphic of Daily News article header and supers “When the whole thing is over, things might get cleared up with some Presidential pardons.” Still of Giuliani and supers “Giuliani Clarifies Comments: NBC News: ‘President Trump is not going to pardon anyone as far as I know… I only said sometimes that happens.’ – Trump Attorney, Rudy Giuliani.’” Tracking shot of Giuliani walking. Clip of Giuliani saying “Stop with all this nonsense about collusion which didn’t happen. (edit) Let’s investigate the investigators. Let’s take a halt to the Mueller investigation. (edit) No interview of the president. He shouldn’t be bothered with it. Why would he get interviewed in a corrupt investigation?” 14:29:51 Gura is joined by former US Attorney (and MSNBC contributor) Joy Vance in Birmingham, Alabama. They discuss Rudy Giuliani’s comments how FBI agents and prosecutors need to be committed to Bellevue, Giuliani’s capacity as White House spokesman, the culture at the Department of Justice, the Inspector General’s report, the campaign Trump and Giuliani are doing regarding the IG report, and Michael Cohen’s attorney requesting a restraining order against Stormy Daniels attorney Michael Avenatti. Insert stills of Giuliani and of Trump and Giuliani. 14:34:17 Gura previews upcoming segment. 14:37:36 Gura reports the IG report fallout: Justice Watchdog: Comey showed bad judgment, but “no bias” in handling of Clinton email probe. Split screen stills of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then-FBI Director James Comey. Insert supers “We found no evidence that the conclusions by the prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations; rather, we determined that they were based on the prosecutors’ assessment of the facts, the law and past departmental practice.” Clip from 2018-06-13 of FBI Director Christopher Wray saying “This report did not find any evidence of political bias or improper considerations actually impacting the investigation.” Clip of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders saying “It reaffirmed the President’s suspicions about Comey’s conduct and the political bias amongst some of the members of the FBI.” Graphic of former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner’s tweet: “Comey’s “pure intentions” are important but not as important as following established DOJ/FBI process and protocols. FBI IG saying that Comey deviated “so clearly and dramatically from FBI and department norms” is strong and fair criticism. #ProcessMatters.” 14:38:20 Gura is joined by former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner in Washington, DC. They discuss James Comey’s actions during the Clinton email probe, what Comey should have done, the Inspector General’s report regarding email probe, FBI Director Christopher Wray’s takeaway from the IG report and Comey’s comment regarding the IG report. Supers “Once you deviate (from established policies and procedures), even in a minor way… You have removed yourself from the comfort of saying this institution has a way of doing this and then every decision is another ad hoc decision that may be informed by our policies and our protocols and principles but it’s never going to be squarely within them.” Various clips of Comey seen. Graphic of Comey’s tweet: “I respect the DOJ IG office, which is why I urged them to do this review. The conclusions are reasonable, even though I disagree with some. People of good faith can see an unprecedented situation differently. I pray no Director faces it again. Thanks to IG’s people for hard work.” 14:42:24 Gura reports Justice Watchdog found that James Comey used personal gmail account to conduct FBI business. Stills of James Comey. Graphic of Hillary Clinton’s tweet: “But my emails.” 14:42:52 Gura is joined by former Hillary Clinton advisor and spokesman Philippe Reines in Washington, DC. They discuss James Comey using a gmail account, Comey’s actions before the presidential election, the IG report being weaponized by Trump, if the report brings closure to Clinton and her supporters, how the IG report was supposed to be on Comey’s actions and how information was leaked, and the actions Comey, Strzok and Page did as individuals. Still of Trump and graphic excerpt of document “72. In addition to the Iowa Fundraiser, which directly benefitted Mr. Trump and his presidential campaign, the Foundation entered into the following prohibited self-dealing transaction that directly benefitted Mr. Trump or entities he controlled: A. On September 11, 2007, the Foundation made a $100,000 payment to the Fisher House foundation, a charitable organization, to settle legal claims against Mar-A-Largo. B.
