Gynaecologist on the contraceptive diaphragm or cap, UK; 1970

A professor of gynaecology at a London hospital, Professor Huntingford, comments on the use and effectiveness of the diaphragm (cap) as a method of contraception, and its pros and cons (benefits, advantages and disadvantages, drawbacks). He says, 'The cap is widely used and gives many couples satisfaction. It detracts slightly less from the spontaneity of sexual intercourse than perhaps the sheath because it can be fitted some time beforehand and therefore doesn't actually interrupt the act itself. But for maximum safety it's got to be used conscientiously and fitted properly - a woman's got to understand her own anatomy... It should be used with a spermicidal jelly or cream to reinforce its effectiveness.' Filmed as part of an educational programme about contraception. UK; Recorded in 1969, broadcast in 1970.
