Kyoto Cormorants Trained To Bring Back Fish Catch When Called By Keepers
Video footage shows trained “umiu” cormorants, many on the loose, scooping up fish and bringing the catch back when keepers call from the shore of Ujigawa river in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, on Nov. 11. Traditional cormorant fishermen rely on ropes to pull the birds back. The unleashed method is being revived for the first time in 17 years since it was last used in Shimane Prefecture. The nine cormorants used in the Nov. 11 demonstration were all artificially bred. The full-scale revival in Uji is set for 2020.
