Former Businessman Now Makes Bamboo Flutes Sought By Players From All Over The World
Video footage taken in Shunan, Yamaguchi Prefecture, shows 81-year-old Chikuyu Okadera crafting “shakuhachi” bamboo flutes in his workshop from well-aged “madake” bamboo sourced from the nearby areas. Okadera first became enamored of the instrument over 60 years while still a university student, after hearing a friend playing on a Tokyo campus. After graduating university, Okadera joined a major construction firm where he eventual rose to a managerial position. At age 55 he quit to follow his present calling and now works together with his 52-year-old son. The former businessman makes instruments costing from 100,000 yen to one million yen each that are sought after by customers from throughout the world.
