Monks Practice Ringing Giant Bell In Kyoto Before New Year’s Eve Countdown

Video footage taken on Dec. 27 at Chion-in, the head temple of the Jodo Shu Buddhist sect located in Higashiyama Ward of Kyoto, shows a team of monks as they practice ringing an immense bell weighing about 70 tons, reaching 3.3 meters in height with a diameter of 2.8 meters. A team of 17 monks work together to strike the bell with a wooden shaft, with 16 of the monks pulling the ram away with ropes to allow another to wretch it back to knock the instrument with great momentum. The bell, considered one of the three grandest in Japan, will begin tolling at about 10:40 p.m. on Dec. 31 to count off the minutes until the New Year.
